Where Denmark used to pride itself in leading the
way in the implementation of human rights, racism, xenophobic
discrimination and demonisation of "unpopular" minorities is now the
order of the day.
This is hardly a new development. In the
years 1996-2001, the printed magazine Faklen included a recurring section
called "Samfundsudsigten", which documented all human rights
violations, racist discrimination and uncomfortable steps towards the
abolition of what was once commonly recognised civil rights reported by
the Danish press.
Until early 2000, this section was regularly
translated to English and distributed as a newsletter in English to a
variety of mailing lists and foreign human rights groups. In 1998, Faklen prepared a report for the UNHCR
concerning racism and xenophobia in Denmark in support of a complain
made by the leaders of the Somali community in Denmark.
We will now (October, 2010) make this material available online once
more, on this page. Its relevance has long been superseded by the
unfortunate political development in Denmark since 2001, but we believe
it to be of historical interest for people looking for the sources of
the rampant xenophobia and racism in Denmark.
